Taking the visual acuite

Having taking the history it is now very important to measure the visual acuity in each eye
.
visual acuite

First the vision in the right eye (VR) and then the vision in left eye (VL) TO measure the visual acuitey in each eye, follow these steps:

1.  The patient should be stand or sit 6 metres (6 long steps) from the visual acuity chart.
2. Close the left eye with an eye pad or the patient's own hand,so that he can only see with his right         eye

3.    Now hold the visual acuite or echart  up to the patient at 6 metres and ask him to read or to point in which direction the 'three legs' go- up, down, right or  left. if he can read the 18 line at 6 mitres he has NORMAL VISION in that eye.

4.   If  he cannot read the 18 line at 6 metres, then try the 60 line, but now at 3 metres from the paient. if he can read the 60 line  at three metres (but not  the 18 line 6 metres) he has POOR VISION.

5.  If he cannot read the 60 line at 3 metres then he is BLIND in that eye

6.  if he is blind then ask him if he is able to see daylight or a bright torch shone into his eye. if he cannot see light, then he is NO PERCEPTION LIGHT and can probably no be helped

7.    Now repeat this test for the left eye, having closed the right eye

8 Now record the visual acuity in each eye .
